Prompt Best Practices

Simple rules that make prompts reliable and reusable.

Write Like a Checklist

  • Start with the goal: “Audit paid search for last 30 days.”
  • List the metrics you need (spend, clicks, CPC, conversions, ROAS).
  • Add comparisons (“vs previous 30 days”) so the AI knows what to measure against.
  • Specify format (“Return a table + bullet recommendations”).

Name Clearly

  • Prefix with platform or client: GA4 – Landing Page Deep Dive.
  • Avoid vague names (“Marketing Report”)—your teammates and AI both rely on the exact wording.

Keep Prompts Modular

  • Break large prompts into smaller ones (Budget check, Creative review, SEO summary) so you can mix and match.
  • Link related prompts inside the description: “Run after ‘Campaign Overview’ if CPA is high.”

Document MCP Needs

  • Add a note if the prompt expects multiple connectors enabled (“Toggle Google Ads + GA4”).
  • Mention the brand variable (“Use whichever brand you reference in the chat”).

Revisit Quarterly

  • Archive unused prompts to keep the list tidy.
  • Update instructions when your KPIs or marketing stack changes.
