Meta Ads MCP Server for ChatGPT: How to Connect It (2026)

InsightfulPipe publishes this guide, and the steps use its hosted Facebook Ads MCP server.

Last updated: 2026-10-21

Short answer: InsightfulPipe's hosted Meta Ads MCP server connects to ChatGPT with one URL. Connect your ad accounts in InsightfulPipe, then in ChatGPT open Plugins, click Add, choose Add custom MCP server and paste https://facebook-ads.insightfulmcp.com/. Sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked, click Authorize access, then type @ in a chat. You need no Meta developer app and no access token. Plans start from $29.99 a month.

Meta Ads MCP server for ChatGPT: the quick version

Six steps take you from a Facebook sign-in to a first Meta Ads question in ChatGPT. Each step has its own section below, with the labels you will see on screen.

  1. In InsightfulPipe, open Connected accounts, click Connect account and choose Facebook Ads.
  2. Pick Read-only or Read & write, click Continue with Facebook Ads and select your ad accounts.
  3. In ChatGPT, open Plugins, click Add, then Add custom MCP server.
  4. Name it Meta Ads, paste https://facebook-ads.insightfulmcp.com/ under Connection, keep OAuth, tick I understand and want to continue and click Create as a plugin.
  5. When the sign-in opens, sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked, and click Authorize access.
  6. In a new chat, type @ and pick Meta Ads.

Want every platform you connected, not only Meta? Install InsightfulPipe from ChatGPT Plugins instead of steps 3 and 4. It connects the full InsightfulPipe MCP server, with Meta Ads, Google Ads and the rest of your workspace in one plugin.

Decision chart: every connected platform goes to the InsightfulPipe plugin in ChatGPT Plugins, Meta Ads alone goes to the Facebook Ads server as a custom MCP server, and reports only goes to a Read-only connection.

What you are actually connecting

You connect ChatGPT to InsightfulPipe's hosted Meta Ads MCP server, and that server to the ad accounts you select. The whole path fits on one line:

ChatGPT → InsightfulPipe Facebook Ads MCP server → your selected Meta ad accounts

ChatGPT never sees your Facebook password or a Meta token. It sends a request over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and InsightfulPipe runs the matching Marketing API call with the access you granted. Reports go through the query_data tool, and changes through a separate tool, execute_action. That split is how MCP differs from calling the API yourself.

Two checks sit on that path. In ChatGPT, the plugin's Permission setting decides when ChatGPT asks before it uses a tool. InsightfulPipe adds the switches your admin sets for each ad account, and Meta's own access for your login still applies at the end.

The path from ChatGPT through the InsightfulPipe Facebook Ads MCP server to your Meta ad accounts, with ChatGPT's plugin permission, InsightfulPipe's per-account switches and your Meta access marked.

Before you connect Meta Ads to ChatGPT

You need four things: access to the ad account in Meta, an InsightfulPipe workspace, a workspace role that can connect accounts, and ChatGPT on the web for a custom MCP server.

  • Meta access. A Facebook login that can open the ad account. To create or edit ads, that login needs permission to manage campaigns there. InsightfulPipe cannot expand what Meta allows the login to do.
  • An InsightfulPipe workspace. Plans start from $29.99 a month. Starter includes 8 connections, and each ad account counts as one. Start a trial from the pricing page.
  • A role that can connect. Owners, Administrators and Operators connect accounts and set their actions. See workspace roles and permissions.
  • ChatGPT on the web. Custom MCP servers are added in ChatGPT on the web. In a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin decides who may add them. Our ChatGPT setup guide covers both routes.

Step 1: Connect Facebook Ads in InsightfulPipe

Step 1 links your Meta ad accounts to your InsightfulPipe workspace. You choose how far ChatGPT may go before Meta asks you to sign in.

  1. Open Connected accounts and click Connect account.
  2. In Add an integration, find Facebook Ads and click Connect.
  3. Choose Read-only or Read & write, and review the list under Agent actions.
  4. Click Continue with Facebook Ads.
  5. Sign in with Facebook and approve the permissions Meta shows.
  6. Select your ad accounts and click Connect.
The access level step when connecting Facebook Ads in InsightfulPipe: Read-only for view and report only, or Read & write for everything in read-only plus the write actions, with user access or system-user access as the connection type.

Read-only asks Meta for ads_read alone. Read & write adds ads_management, which every write needs, plus a choice of User access or System-user access. A Read-only connection locks every write until an admin reconnects it with Read & write.

Each ad account becomes its own connection, with its own access badge and switches. Every request names one ad account, and every campaign, ad set, ad, creative, audience or pixel ID in it must belong to that account. The Facebook Ads connector reference lists the endpoint and fields.

Step 2 (fastest): Install InsightfulPipe from ChatGPT Plugins

The plugin listing is the one-click route. It connects the full InsightfulPipe server, so ChatGPT reaches Meta Ads and every other platform your workspace connected, through one sign-in.

  1. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins.
  2. Search for InsightfulPipe and open its listing, or click Open in ChatGPT on any InsightfulPipe MCP page.
  3. Click Install plugin.
  4. Sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked, then click Authorize access.
The InsightfulPipe listing in ChatGPT Plugins, by Insightful Pipe, LLC, with the Install plugin button highlighted and Meta Ads among the advertising platforms it reaches.

For Meta Ads alone, with its own name in the @ menu, use Step 3 instead.

Step 3: Or add the Facebook Ads server as a custom MCP server

A custom MCP server gives ChatGPT the Facebook Ads server on its own. You paste one URL, and the sign-in runs through InsightfulPipe.

  1. Copy the server URL, https://facebook-ads.insightfulmcp.com/. It is on the Facebook Ads page under MCP Servers in the app.
  2. In ChatGPT, go to Plugins, click Add, then Add custom MCP server.
  3. Enter the name Meta Ads.
  4. Under Connection, keep Server URL selected and paste the URL.
  5. Leave Authentication on OAuth.
  6. Review the warning, tick I understand and want to continue, then click Create as a plugin.
  7. When the sign-in opens, sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked, and click Authorize access.
ChatGPT's Add custom MCP server form with the name Meta Ads and https://facebook-ads.insightfulmcp.com/ under Connection, Authentication on OAuth, and the risk checkbox above Create as a plugin.

InsightfulPipe shows its Grant access to page each time you connect. It names the app under App and where its access goes under Access goes to, and lists Your accounts and Requested permissions above Deny access and Authorize access.

ChatGPT reaches only the ad accounts your workspace connected and granted to you. If none is yours to use, Authorize access stays greyed out: finish Step 1 or ask an owner or admin for access.

Step 4: Use Meta Ads in a ChatGPT chat

ChatGPT calls an installed plugin when a request needs it, and the @ menu picks it outright. Picking it keeps ChatGPT off web search for account questions.

  1. Start a new chat.
  2. Type @ in the prompt box.
  3. Pick Meta Ads, or InsightfulPipe if you installed the listing.
  4. Name the ad account in your request, by name or act_ ID.

Be explicit when it matters. "Use the Meta Ads plugin for this and do not use web search" keeps the answer on your live account data.

Step 5: Choose which actions ChatGPT may run

Step 5 decides, account by account, which of the 55 Meta Ads actions ChatGPT can use. A new Read & write connection starts with 51 of 55 on: every read and write action, with the 4 deletes off.

  1. In InsightfulPipe, open Connected accounts.
  2. On the ad account's row, click the actions button, such as 51/55 actions. Its tooltip reads Configure actions for this account.
  3. Use the All, Read only, Write and Destructive tabs to switch actions on or off.
  4. Click Save actions.

Only an owner, admin or operator can change these switches, at any time. The server refuses a switched-off action in every AI client and tells the assistant: "This action is disabled for this connected account. An owner or admin must enable it for the account."

Every Meta Ads action is a switch on InsightfulPipe's Facebook Ads MCP server: 39 read actions on, 12 write actions on, and 4 delete actions off until an owner, admin or operator switches them on.

ChatGPT has its own layer. Open Settings > Plugin settings, pick the plugin and open Permission. The choices are Always ask, Allow read-only tools, Allow low-risk tools (the default) and Allow all tools. Choose Allow read-only tools: reports run without a prompt, and ChatGPT asks before every change (OpenAI).

ChatGPT's Permissions page for an InsightfulPipe plugin, with Allow read-only tools highlighted: reports run without asking and every change waits for approval.

Verify it worked

Three checks, shortest first, confirm the connection without changing anything in Meta.

1. The plugin is installed. Open the InsightfulPipe listing in Plugins. Once it is installed, its button reads Manage. Under Settings > Plugin settings, the plugin should list your InsightfulPipe account under Connected accounts.

2. A prompt that cannot do harm. Paste this as it is. Its last line tells ChatGPT to leave everything alone.

Use the Meta Ads plugin.
List the Meta ad accounts available to this connection.
Return the account name, account ID, currency and time zone.
Do not run a report and do not change anything.
A ChatGPT chat running the read-only Meta ad account lookup through the InsightfulPipe plugin, returning a table of ad accounts with every name, ID, currency and time zone masked and nothing changed.

3. A real read. Ask for last week's spend by campaign, then compare one number with Ads Manager for the same dates. If they disagree, check the date range, the attribution setting and the account's time zone first. If check 1 or 2 fails, see Troubleshooting below.

Prompts to run first

Start with reads that answer a real question, then one change that stays paused. Name the ad account first: each request works on one account.

Prompt

What ChatGPT runs

"What was ROAS by campaign over the last 14 days?"

Campaign insights with purchase value

"Break down last month's spend and CPA by placement"

Insights with a placement breakdown

"Which ads have a frequency above 4 and a falling CTR?"

Ad-level insights, to spot creative fatigue

"What changed on this ad account this week?"

The account's activity history

"Create a paused traffic campaign with a $50 daily budget"

create_campaign, which always creates it paused

Two prompts to paste as they are:

Use the Meta Ads plugin and ad account [AD_ACCOUNT_ID].

Compare the last 30 complete days with the previous 30 complete days.
Break the report down by campaign.
Include spend, impressions, clicks, purchases, cost per purchase and ROAS.
Use the Meta Ads plugin and ad account [AD_ACCOUNT_ID].

List every ad with a frequency above [FREQUENCY] over the last 14 days.
For each one, show spend, and CTR for this period and the previous 14 days.
Propose which to pause, but do not change anything yet.

The prompt library and the Facebook Ads Claude skills are free to use, and the prompts work in ChatGPT as written. 50 Facebook Ads prompts goes further, and the creative performance guide covers fatigue in depth.

Claude skills package a whole job. The Facebook Ads account auditor grades an account in eight areas, and the performance analyzer explains a cost spike.

What ChatGPT may change in Meta Ads, and who decides

ChatGPT can use only the actions an admin has switched on for that ad account. That makes InsightfulPipe the safest way to let an AI agent like ChatGPT change a Meta Ads account: each limit below is a switch, and your admin decides where it sits.

  • 55 actions: 39 read, 12 write, 4 destructive. Writes create and update campaigns, ad sets, ads and creatives, upload images and videos, and add custom conversions and lead forms.
  • New campaigns, ad sets and ads start paused, for you to set live in Ads Manager when they are ready. A request for ACTIVE still gets PAUSED.
  • Setting ads live stays with you. ChatGPT can pause anything, and PAUSED is the only status the server accepts on an update. A request to go live fails with: "Unsupported value for 'status' in action 'update_campaign': ACTIVE."
  • Budgets and bids go to Meta as you state them, and an edit on something already live applies at once. Budgets travel in cents, so 5000 means $50.00 on a USD account. To keep ChatGPT off spend, an owner, admin or operator switches off update_campaign and update_adset.
  • Deletes stay off until an admin switches them on: delete_campaign, delete_adset and delete_ad. Meta treats them as permanent.
  • Roles hold. The User role runs only enabled reads. Writes need an operator, admin or owner.
The Facebook Ads server's own rules, read in Claude without changing anything: update_campaign accepts only PAUSED, and a paused campaign goes live only when someone switches it on in Ads Manager. The same server rules hold in ChatGPT.

Whichever route you use, set an account spending limit in Ads Manager before any agent edits a budget. Start a trial to set these switches on your own ad accounts.

Troubleshooting

Most failures come from a sign-in that did not finish, an ad account nobody granted, or an action switched off for that account. The MCP troubleshooting guide lists more error messages and fixes.

  • There is no Add custom MCP server option. Use ChatGPT on the web. In a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin controls who may add custom MCP servers. The InsightfulPipe plugin still installs from ChatGPT Plugins.
  • Meta Ads is not in the @ menu. The sign-in did not finish. Open Plugins and find it under your personal plugins. When the sign-in opens, sign in to InsightfulPipe if asked, and click Authorize access.
  • ChatGPT answers from the web instead of your account. Pick the plugin with @ and add "do not use web search" to the prompt.
  • "You don't have access to any Facebook Ads accounts. Contact your workspace administrator to request access." The Grant access page shows this under No accessible accounts, with Authorize access greyed out: no ad account in this workspace is yours to use. Finish Step 1, or ask an owner or admin for access.
  • "This action is disabled for this connected account. An owner or admin must enable it for the account." An owner, admin or operator can switch it on for that ad account.
  • "This account is connected read-only, so this action cannot be enabled for it. An owner or admin must reconnect it with Read & Write permissions." Reconnect the ad account and choose Read & write.
  • "Your role does not have permission to execute write actions. Only operators, admins, and owners can execute write operations." Your role is User. An owner or admin can change it.
  • The report is empty. Try a wider date range and remove optional filters. An empty report is not always an authentication problem.

Meta's own ads MCP server and ChatGPT

Meta runs its own ads MCP server, and many answers to this question describe it. Each point below comes from Meta's own pages, checked on 2026-10-21.

  • Hosted by Meta, in open beta. Meta announced it in open beta on April 29, 2026, and its help page says: "You may not have access to all of these tools and features yet."
  • Creation and activation. Its ad creation tools create campaigns, ad sets and ads paused. A separate activate tool "starts spending budget", after your AI client asks for confirmation.
  • Rules. Rules that block actions per ad account sit in Business Suite, for people with full control of a business portfolio. Meta's rules guide lists them as "in limited availability".
  • What it needs. Open-beta access, full control of a business portfolio to set rules, and a Meta app ID for the own-app route in Meta's developer guide.
  • Scope. It covers Meta only.

InsightfulPipe puts Meta Ads next to 49 more platforms in one ChatGPT plugin, keeps setting ads live with you in Ads Manager, and gives every workspace a switch on every action for every ad account.

The best Meta Ads MCP servers compares the field from each vendor's own documentation, and Facebook Ads connectors compared covers reporting tools as well.

Claude, Claude Code, Codex and Cursor

The same server URL works in every client that supports remote MCP servers, and the same account switches apply in each. Each client finishes with the same InsightfulPipe sign-in and Authorize access step.

claude mcp add --transport http facebook-ads-mcp https://facebook-ads.insightfulmcp.com/
codex mcp add facebook-ads-mcp --url https://facebook-ads.insightfulmcp.com/

For scripted reports, the InsightfulPipe agentic CLI reaches the same ad accounts from the terminal.
